Animal Totems

I buy into the theory that when you see an animal (or in this case, insects) that seem out of the ordinary, you should take something away from it. Many people believe that so-called "animal totems" are powerful messages from the spirit world. I happen to be one of them. Today, I saw two interesting totems in my city driveway- a grasshopper and a dragonfly. Here are two versions of its symbolism.

GRASSHOPPER
Uncanny leaps forward

The  Chinese symbol of good luck and abundance,
Grasshopper gives its totem people the ability to take chances.
To move on hunches and take the leap forward.
Things might not move for them as they do for other people;
progress is not step-by-step, but rather extremely fast.
Trust your own instincts on when to make the leaps.
Trust your inner voice.
It will lead you to great successes.
Don’t be afraid to leap –
and remember that Grasshopper only leaps forward – never backward.

DRAGONFLY
Illusion, The Power of Light

Dragonfly is the power of light.
The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water
and the influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people.
They will be emotional and passionate
during their early years (the influence of water)
and more balanced with greater mental clarity
and control in as they mature (the influence of air).

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change,
the messages of wisdom and enlightenment; and the communication from the elemental world.
Dragonfly medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which need changing.
Call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.
The number 2 is important to Dragonfly,
so think in terms of two year periods when you begin a change.
Dragonfly brings the light and color of transformation into your life.

The Times New Tarot: FOUR OF WANDS

The Four of Wands

The card that I drew for myself this evening is one that I don't recall ever getting before (at least not in recent memory)- THE FOUR OF WANDS. It symbolizes happiness in regard to relationships. I've been single for a long time, so this is quite promising. I'm not exactly looking for love at the moment but I'm always open to its possibility.

Psychic Elizabeth Palin explains her interpretation of the Four of Wands:

Card Meaning (via Biddy Tarot)

The Four of Wands heralds celebration, good times, a happy and harmonious home environment and good news. In numerology, four symbolizes stability and firm foundations, and in the case of the Four of Wands, you are now enjoying a period of happiness and stability. This card indicates a sense of harmony and balance as well as completion, and thus symbolizes a time of peace and joy in life that come as the result of often difficult and challenging effort. The Four of Wands is one of the most positive cards in the Tarot deck and indicates general good fortune, satisfaction, and fulfillment.

With the Four of Wands, it is the perfect time to get together with your family and friends and to celebrate all the wonderful times that you have had together. Often, this card reflects the holiday period where you get together with the extended family and join in a celebration. Alternatively, it may be as simple as inviting your closest friends over for an intimate dinner and a few glasses of nice wine. The Four of Wands often points to a marriage, engagement, birth of a child, a birthday, graduation or other type of celebration that marks a special milestone.

If you have been working on a project, you will reach an important milestone and will have cause to celebrate. You have completed a significant phase of the project and can feel very proud of what you have accomplished so far. This card augurs a time of joy and satisfaction in life and represents the personal gratification of a job well done, a goal attained, and a vision beginning to be realized.

Given the Four of Wands is closely associated with the home environment, you may be working on improving or renovating your home. You may have recently purchased a new home or are very close to finding a new home and getting ready to settle down in your new environment.

The Four of Wands indicates peace, harmony and tranquility. You may find a refuge from the turmoils of life, perhaps by meeting someone new in a romantic setting, or by finding a new place to live that is ‘away from it all’. If you have been experiencing any disagreements with others, now will be the time to make a peace offering and instead focus on creating harmony in the relationship.

The Four of Wands provides encouragement when things seem too daunting. The card serves as a reminder that most things in life do not come easily, and so when you do accomplish a major milestone, you should be proud of everything that you have achieved. The Four of Wands is also representative of move from one stage to another, and moving past mistakes and challenges to a place of peace, acceptance and happiness.

Style Spotlight: Beyonce. 2011 MTV VMAs.

I tried to stay away. I really did. But boredom got the best of me. I turned on MTV around 10 pm and was surprised to see how beautiful the VMA stage was. I really loved the way it looked- very futuristic and sleek. I didn't pay much attention to the show itself but the buzz on twitter was Beyonce's pregnancy. I missed the red carpet coverage but thanks to the magic and instant gratification that is the internet, I was able to see the infamous pictures. I'm not a particularly big fan of Beyonce but I have to say, she looked STUNNING tonight. I adored her orange Lanvin gown (I want, I want!). The hair and makeup also looked flawless. She's got that pregnancy glow and it's working for her! Sadly, there wasn't an ounce of sartorial competition (aside from Wiz Khalifa's Steelers hat) that I noticed. Beyonce easily gets my golden hanger award- BEST DRESSED by a long shot!

On My Mind.

I read these questions in the September issue of InStyle. Here are my answers...

My teenage dream was...
I wanted to be a television news reporter and eventually fall in love with someone I had the opportunity to interview. So cliche.

My guilty pleasure is...
Sleeping in very late and completely shutting myself off from the outside world. I'm very content staying introverted. I can spend hours by myself. I can occupy my time with reading, writing, listening to music, watching movies... Sometimes, I wonder if I'm meant to be single. I enjoy the company of others and love a good conversation or party but for the majority of time, I enjoy my own company.

For my next adventure...
I want to travel as much as possible. I wish I had a disposable income and could pick up and go anywhere. I recently told my best friend that next summer, I'd love to spend a couple weeks traveling throughout Europe with her. I don't care where I sleep or how much money I have in my pocket. I just want to see and experience as much as possible.

My beauty essentials are...
I love makeup but the things that I consider vital to my beauty regime are natural- lots of sleep, lots of water, no sun, no smoking. As far as products go, I have pretty dry skin, so I try to moisturize as much as possible.

Secretly I'm a...
Loner. I know a lot of people but prefer to keep a small circle of close friends and family. I can be very outgoing when the mood strikes me but I am content on my own.

I'm hooked on...
At the moment, I really enjoy a late night glass of red wine. I'm also into reading about metaphysical studies and new age practices. Astrology, tarot, meditation, palmistry, astral projection, psychics, astronomy, spirituality, etc... I guess I am a bit of a weirdo.

Meditation via pleiadiantalk

I'm new to meditation but this video put me into an absolute state of relaxation. I felt myself being levitated above my bed as well as my head rocking back and forth. I'm curious to read more about these types of occurances during meditation. I'm truly astonished at its power.

FROM EDWARD ALEXANDER (Maggador):
@kristaselene Yes, you experienced a partial out of body experience (Astral projection) and briefly had a moment of awarness & consciousness in your astral body, instead of your physical body, where it was moving a bit "out of synch" with the physical body. This is a very good thing, and also a sign that doing astral projections should be fairly easy for you, feel free to contact me if you want more information and assistance on this topic. Cheers

This message confirmed what my instincts told me. It also aligned with much of the information available online. I consider myself to be pretty attuned to my feelings and emotions. I'm glad to know that meditation and astral projection might be something that will benefit me spiritually.

Today happens to be National Dog Day. You can always count on twitter to inform you of everything. Here are some pictures of my 1-year-old shih-tzu, Ireland, enjoying our neighbor's garden. I love all types of animals- dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, elephants, deer... you name it. But I have a special place in my heart for shih-tzus. They are such a sweet breed. I've always had one in my life. Ireland reminds me of a teddy bear. She's a small dog that can sit on your lap but she's not so teeny tiny that she resembles a rodent. This is such a classic. Since The Skyliners are from Pittsburgh, I hear them on the radio all the time. But it's still worthy of a post! Facebook Exchange of the Day

One of my best friends, Valerie, never ceases to amuse me. She's a Gemini (June 11th) and I'm an Aquarius (February 1st), so we get along perfectly. We have similar interests and share the same twisted sense of humor. A lot of the girls we went to high school with are getting married, so we often joke about being single. I always say that by the time I get married, the only girls left to catch the bouquet will be the flower girls or divorcees. Don't get me wrong, getting married is definitely what I want for myself... just not anytime soon. I mean, I'm only 25! I thought this posting was too cute not to share with my fellow single ladies...

Traffic Signals

I'm one of those people who reads deeply into things. If I'm in traffic, I always read vanity plates or notice what college decal is displayed on the back of someone's car. Tonight, I noticed this Biblical passage on a tractor trailer. It jumped out at me because it was from Romans:

After contemplating its meaning, I glanced to my right and noticed the license plate on the car next to the semi. The plate had St. John written on it. I'm Catholic but admittedly haven't been to church in a long time. I don't agree with a lot of what the church promotes but at the end of the day, it is my religion. I consider myself to be spiritual. I went to Catholic school from K-12, so Catholicism is a part of who I am. When I got home, I looked up what St. John is the patron of...

It turns out, St. John is the patron saint of writers and authors. As someone who has a lot of ambition but seems to be stagnant at the ripe old age of 25, I couldn't help but to take some inspiration from seeing these "traffic signals". I often pray to St. Anthony of Padua and St. Therese of Lisieux. Over the years, I have been no less than amazed at the power their prayers have given me. St. Anthony has found EVERYTHING I have ever prayed to him to help me find... usually in a matter of minutes or even seconds. St. Therese has given me a lot of strength and will power. I will be sure to say some devotions to St. John for motivation and encouragement to help me succeed in my professional goals as a writer.

Trivial Pursuit

Tonight, I went to one of my favorite spots in Pittsburgh, Pub Quiz at brillobox. The questions tend to be really challenging but the ambiance is always fantastic. I love the decor and lighting fixtures at brillobox. The drinks are also great.

My teammates and I (well, technically it was just me and my friend, Jen, since my cousin was mentally preoccupied during both rounds of play) came in 9th place. Sure, there was only 16 teams but this isn't your average pool of contestants. The people who frequent brillobox are really smart. They take their trivia nights seriously... usually with 6 people on a team. The fact that I didn't come in last place was enough to make my week. Way to go Team Headtrip Parade (Gavin DeGraw song/lyric reference... inside joke).

Things I learned or proudly knew, while playing trivia at brillobox:

The largest earthquake ever to be recorded in the United States actually happened in Alaska. I knew it was a 9.2 magnitude quake but for some reason, thought it was in Missouri.

I know the NFL really well. Of course I was able to list the four teams that have cats as mascots within a matter of seconds: Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Ninja Turtles and their respective art masterpieces

Cult movies- Heathers, Showgirls, This Is Spinal Tap

Name That Tune- Outkast, Weezer, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pharrell...

Already looking forward to next time :)

This Is Not a Parody

I don't know what's funnier, the story itself or the way in which the news station reported it. The folks at channel 19 in Ohio knew damn well that they were going to milk this for all it was worth. Everything from the script to the graphics... it has viral video written all over it. This is a prime example of why I quit the television news world. Oh... and the reporter's name is Harry Boomer. He flawlessly delivered the most ethical line of journalism I've ever heard:

"Drop a dime on this fool, call the police and report this freak."

The Butterfly Effect

Tonight, I was in the mood to watch a supernatural movie. I chose The Butterfly Effect because I haven't seen it since I was about 18 or 19-years-old. I really appreciate films that challenge my thought process. If you're one of the few people who haven't seen this movie or if it has been awhile like it was for me, I highly suggest checking it out.

The movie had me thinking about the actual butterfly effect theory. While much of what I have read correlates the phenomenon to weather patterns, I can't help but think of human interaction. It's amazing to consider how each decision we make can have the possibility of impacting our lives in a tremendous way. With the tenth anniversary of 9/11 quickly approaching, I'm sure there will be plenty of survival stories about how someone missed their usual bus or train that morning by mere minutes, setting into motion a delay long enough to spare their lives. While these stories will be spotlighted for obvious reasons, it happens to each of us, every day... perhaps without realizing it.

Who we meet, what we learn and ultimately, who we become, is shaped by every split decision we make. How everything comes together or conversely falls apart, is really something to think about...

Shake Shake Shake

I live in Pittsburgh. Never felt an Earthquake in my life. It just doesn't happen here. But today's quake in Richmond, VA could be felt. The only thing I noticed was a mirror on my wall was shaking and the ever so slightest sway. I've always wanted to experience a real Earthquake... without any injuries or damage, of course, but this 5.9er left me with Mother Nature's equivalent of blue balls. I almost envy my friends in the buildings of downtown Pittsburgh and DC who legitimately witnessed desks shaking. That sounds really messed up, huh? I can blame Saved by the Bell for this twisted, little desire. It had an Earthquake episode that made me feel left out. All we ever experienced in school was snow days and fire drills. Don't get me wrong, I'm fortunate to live in a place that is generally safe from major natural disasters but the thrill of a little danger every now and again can really liven things up. I'm curious to see if Elenin/Nibiru or HAARP will be blamed for this one.

Semi Home Slurred

As someone who has worked in television, I really appreciate this type of video. On-air talent have such a knack for flipping the switch. I would often witness anchors talking about how their hair looked to a murder... all within the matter of seconds. It's nice to see that the first lady of New York and Food Network host, Sandra Lee, is semi-phony like the rest of the zombies gracing our airwaves.

I look forward to the day when censorship is thrown out the window and real people can host shows in a real way... just like these bloopers. This will be the type of video that is shown to all future, aspiring hosts. The outtakes come as no surprise to me. Sandra is always finding a way to include alcohol into her recipes and parties. I kind of love it. Food Network should air the raw tapes. I bet ratings would skyrocket... and we all know that's the name of the game in television.

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUES HAVE FINNALLY ARRIVED!!!!!

I have read fashion magazines since I was a very little girl. When I was young, I would read an issue then cut its pages apart. I'd make random scrapbooks and design my own magazines. I wanted to be a fashion editor/writer (I still wouldn't mind but New York City isn't where I want to live). Magazines combine some of my favorite things in life- getting mail, reading, learning, people, places, style, decor, books, music... I get super excited when the September issues come out!

My favorite magazines are Elle, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle and Vogue. I subscribe to tons of others but these four are my loves! I'm definitely old school about certain things. I enjoy reading online but when it comes to books and magazines, I prefer the real deal. I appreciate its tangibility and familiarity. I collect Vogue September issues and have them displayed on a bookshelf. I could go on and on about my love for magazines but I think I'll start reading one instead... I'll be sure to share anything interesting that I discover as well as the best fashion trends for Fall/Winter '11! :)

I'm currently laying in bed with a glass of red wine and a flickering candle to my right, my precious shih-tzu, Ireland, to my left and Coast to Coast AM streaming through my speakers. It's quite the picture of relaxation and a prime example of my idea of perfection. Tonight's show is focusing on people's experiences with Mothman. My boyfriend, George Noory (I seriously have a crush on the man), is off tonight but George Knapp is doing a nice job with hosting.

If you haven't heard of or never listened to Coast to Coast AM, I can't recommend it enough. I've been a fan for many years. When I was in college, I would often come home from the bar, take a bubblebath and listen to the show. I'm fascinated by the supernatural realm and all of the topics that the program covers (UFOs, conspiracy theories, science/technology, ghosts, etc). The guests are well-informed and the listeners who call-in are always intriguing (open lines are often some of the best segments). The show also plays some pretty good bumper music. Since I'm a night owl, I'm naturally alert when the show airs. Listening to Coast to Coast is definitely one of my favorite things in the world!

Enneagram of Personality

I previously mentioned on my blog that on the Myers-Briggs personality test, I am an INFJ (the rarest type, 1% of the world's population). I really like psychological personality assessments. I know myself extremely well, so my results are always accurate. If you have yet to take this test, I highly recommend doing so.

Another type of assessment that I appreciate is called the Enneagram of Personality. This uses 9 points of interest on an enneagram to represent the 9 different types of personality.

The 9 types of personality are defined as follows:

1. Reformer
2. Helper
3. Achiever
4. Individualist
5. Investigator
6. Loyalist
7. Enthusiast
8. Challenger
9. Peacemaker

I'm number 4, The Individualist
Ego Fixation: Melancholy
Holy Idea: Origin
Basic Fear: Commonness
Basic Desire: Uniqueness, Authenticity
Temptation: Self-castigation, Withdrawal
Vice/Passion: Envy
Virtue: Equanimity
Stress: 2
Security: 1

Type four is the bohemian of the enneagram world. They are artistic, creative and internally focused. They value understanding and being understood. They love romanticism and frequently lead dramatic lives. Their preferred style of dress is dramatic costume, frequently in black. Fours populate the arts. They can access their inner life in a remarkable way and convert that emotional turmoil into creativity. Fours are searching for their own authenticity and truth. They do so by sifting through the myriad emotional experiences they have each day. Our world would be less interesting, less artistic and less colorful without fours.

Taking into account the "wing" aspect of the chart, my personality is 4w5 (my wing is 5):
Enneagram Type 4 with the 5 Wing, you desire to be avant-garde. You see yourself as original, sincere, mysterious, subtle, artistic and independent. 4w5's have intellectual as well as emotional insights and can often synthesize experiences into something intensely personal yet timeless. Under stress, they can become alienated.

Note: Wikipedia has a great chart where I pulled some of this information from. You can read about all of the personality types by clicking here.

If you're interested in finding out where you fit into the spectrum, there are plenty of free tests available online! I personally enjoy filling out these types of questionnaires. It's very introspective and therapeutic for me.

Two Thousand Five.

Over on facebook, I saw one of those random, little tags floating around. I can be a nerd when it comes to these sorts of things. So, of course, I "liked it". The year that I was given from the original poster was 2005...

HER TAG:

MY RESPONSE:

I was given the year 2005.
I turned 19 on February 1st of that year.
I was a freshman in college, living in the dorms at West Virginia University- one of the funnest and most memorable years of my life!
In the fall, I was a sophomore and had my first apartment at a place called Sterling Ridge/College Park.
You could usually find me double fisting Amaretto Sours on most nights of the week.
I was the Queen of Hearts or the Red Queen for Halloween this year.
The Steelers won Super Bowl XL in February '06 but it was for the 2005 season... lots of great football that year!
The Mountaineers went 11-1 and won the Sugar Bowl on January 2nd, '06.
This was an amazing year in my life.
If I could go back, I probably would!

Halloween 2005 with my amazing friend, Meghan who I miss soo much!

The mathematicians over at OkCupid.com, used their brain powers for the greater good and came up with a list of the top 10 sluttiest cities in the country. The matchmaking geeks used their algorithms and statistics to decide that Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington have the most users looking for "casual relationships."

I've never been to either of these fine cities but I have had clients from the region who have told me that the Pacific-Northwest is definitely my speed. With plenty of rainfall, craft beer and an influx of hipsters, it's no surprise that the residents of these metropolises enjoy a dreary day tryst with a lover they found online. But "what cities rounded out the top 10," you might be asking yourself...

Pittsburgh came in third! hahaha. It seems like we get as much rain (give or take) as Portland and Seattle. And lately, I have been noticing more and more bicyclists commuting on our steep and winding roads. Pittsburgh does drink a lot of beer. Hmmm... maybe we do have some commonalities with our flannel-clad neighbors to the west.

SLUTTIEST CITIES LOOKING TO GET IT IN:

1. Portland, Oregon

2. Seattle, Washington

3. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

4. Miami, Florida

5. San Francisco, California

6. Dallas, Texas

7. San Bernardino, California

8. Denver, Colorado

9. San Diego, California

10. Houston, Texas

Some of my favorite things include beauty, style, architecture, books, tarot and astrology, thrifting and my shih-tzu, Ireland. I’m engaged to the love of my lifetimes and we look forward to starting our next chapter together. If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you!
