Sexy Witches

A few years late to the Coven but this was hilarious! Of course, I love all things witchy but this transcends the genre. Halloween week is upon us!

Wonderwall: Fall Feels

Here in Pittsburgh, we've been experiencing a bit of an Autumnal heat wave; certainly not anything tropical but it has been quite lovely. Temperatures in the 60s and 70s with plenty of sunshine. The leaves have changed and begun to fall. I'm thrilled to be able to drive with the top down for a few extra rides. The atmosphere is perfect. My favorite time of year.

*The ultimate fall song and the one that started it all for me...

Quoteworthy: Oscar de la Renta 1932-2014

"I always say this: live, love, and laugh. A huge mistake we make is forgetting that one day we will die. We think that we are going to live forever. I always say life is like a little garden. There is a time to plant, then a time you have to weed. Just think about people you've deeply cared for. And then think of the people you wish you'd spent more time with. Or about the things you had loved and whether you'd given enough time to them."
-Oscar de la Renta

And here are just a few of my favorite creations in recent years from the legendary designer himself.

Amy Adams at The Oscars.

Jessica Alba at The Golden Globes.

Allison Williams at The Emmys.

Flick Pick: Nightcrawler

Here we have a film that perfectly exemplifies one of the reasons why I no longer watch or work in television news. I studied broadcasting in college and worked in the field after graduation. "If it bleeds it leads" is certainly the name of the game. We live in a twisted society. Looking forward to seeing this one. Also, Jake Gyllenhaal is a friend to Pittsburgh. So there's that. Brilliant actor. And a resounding "HELL YES!" to the Kendrick Lamar song used in the shorter trailers running on television.

Brad Pitt Gets It

You bow before royalty. You kiss the Pope's ring. When you're in the presence of the perfection that is Shia LaBeouf, you tie both of those realities together. Brad Pitt gets it.

The Times New Travel: Cumberland Island, Georgia

I first heard about Cumberland Island when JFK Jr. married there in the nineties (even as a young girl I loved John John). I later read about this beautiful place in more detail from Christina Haag's touching memoir, Come to the Edge (highly recommend this book).

Copyright 1996, Denis Reggie, used with permission.

Isolated, pristine, untouched. I've flown over this part of the country quite a few times and have been semi-nearby but have yet to actually experience it in all of its natural beauty. Wild horses, exotic beaches and sand dunes, historic ruins, quaint accommodations. You don't hear enough about Cumberland Island. Remote yet accessible. It definitely seems like an ideal spot for a romantic getaway or therapeutic retreat. It's definitely on my list of must-see places here in the U.S.

Epitaphs- Hauntingly Beautiful

Ever since I was a little girl, I've always been drawn to cemeteries. I remember visiting the graves of my grandparents and reading the headstones of nearby souls. The resting places of people whose lives ended decades, centuries even, before mine ever began. Seeing the burial plots of young children my own age and babies was an indelible experience.

I grew up around the corner from a beautiful old cemetery that steeply overlooks the city of Pittsburgh. Memories of playing "dead" with friends when we were kids, midnight sneak outs in high school, solitude walks. I find so much solace in places like this.

As Autumn has arrived and Halloween is quickly approaching, I am in a much more macabre mood. Cemetery photography is incredibly gorgeous but I believe there isn't enough epitaph tributes online. Perhaps I'll make it one of my own projects. I scoured the web to find meaningful last words from the dearly departed. From what little results I was able to find, here are just a few epitaphs that resonated with me...

National Poetry Day

"We are like roses that have never bothered to bloom when we should have bloomed and it is as if the Sun has become disgusted with waiting."
-Charles Bukowski

"Iron Sky" by Paolo Nutini (Live)

"Iron Sky"

We are proud individuals living on the city,
But the flames couldn’t go much higher.
We find God and religions too,
To paint us with salvation.
But no one,
No nobody,
Can give you the power,

To rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.

Oh, that’s life
That’s dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

From which we’ll rise over love,
Over hate,
From this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.

You just got to hold on!
You just got to hold on!

Ohhh ohhhh oh oh

(To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair.
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die,
and the power they took from the people will return to the people.
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men –
machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful,
to make this life a wonderful adventure
Let us use that power!
Let us all unite!)

And we’ll rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds
Over fear,
Into freedom.
Into freedom!

From which we’ll rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.
Freedom!

Oh!
Rain on me!
Rain on me!
Rain on me!
