My parents met at a Halloween party in the early 60s. My Mom jokes that my Dad brought another girl but he took her home. They've been through a lot together but have always stood by each other's side. My Dad served in Vietnam but wrote many letters to my Mom that she still has. He actually stepped on a landmine and lost his leg on my Mother's 21st birthday. She could have easily left him but she never wavered. Their's is a true love that I someday hope to find. They finally got married a couple decades after first meeting with my sister and I following a number of years after that. I always tell people that if my parents got married and had kids in a similar time frame to what their peers were doing, I would be significantly older (or perhaps not here at all).
I'm grateful for the example that they've set for me as to what a strong relationship looks like. They've sacrificed their entire lives to give my sister and I the best education and opportunities available. I love them for the values they've instilled in me and for making me the person I am today. In terms of relationships, they've never pushed me towards being with someone or not being with someone. Instead, they set the example to never be in a rush or force things to happen. True love will find you in the end...
