"Cheerleader" by St. Vincent.
I was a cheerleader for over 10 years. I really love those memories. A lot of people think negatively of us "sweater monkeys" but the stereotypes are not always accurate. By now, it's completely played out. At my high school (North Catholic- Go Trojans!), the mean girls were actually the ones who weren't involved in anything and were clearly apathetic about life in general. But I digress.
For some reason, it has taken me a little while to warm up to St. Vincent's music (not a huge fan of either of her other two records) but this song strikes a cord. I don't necessarily relate to the lyrics (maybe in some ways I do?) but I really like the vibe and sound. "Cheerleader" is featured on St. Vincent's most recent album, Strange Mercy, which was released last fall. The album has definitely grown on me.
And just for kicks, here is a picture of my all-star competitive cheerleading squad from my senior year of high school in 2004. We were the Pittsburgh Poison Spiders and we were pretty much amazing:
When I think of my Poison squad, many songs come to mind from our competition routine music. One tune in particular stands out vividly in my memory:
"Poison" by Alice Cooper (I LOVED stunting & dancing to this music! It was so appropriate!)... HOT!
